The Vedas are a large body of texts originating in ancient India. Composed in Vedic Sanskrit, these texts constitute the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism.
The Vedas are “not of human agency”, according to Hindu tradition. They are said to have been directly revealed. Because of this they are called sruti, which means “what is heard”.
The different Indian philosophies and sects have taken differing positions on the Vedas. It’s very interesting to see a whole spectrum of beliefs about the Vedas from the ultimate truth to others in India who do not accept the authority of the Vedas.
In English, the term Veda is often used loosely to refer to the Samhitas (collection of mantras, or chants) of the four canonical Vedas (Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda).
